NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION

Pixie Frogs are very inactive frogs that spend most of their time buried in their substrate. They are nocturnal, meaning they are awake at night. Handling any frog is very stressful to the frog and can cause harm to the animal due to the oils on our skin. Pixie Frogs are often kept for their aggressive appetites, however for this same reason they should always be housed alone.

FEEDING

Carnivorous (insectivorous) - live food. Protein sources such as: gut-loaded crickets, earthworms, wax worms and roaches and the occasional thawed frozen pinky should be a part of their diet.

SUPPLEMENTS

Dust food with calcium supplement and vitamin supplements. As a rule, a growing juvenile’s food should be dusted more often than an adult’s.

WATER

All water given to amphibians for bathing, swimming or drinking, as well as water used for misting must be 100% free of chlorine and heavy metals.

ENCLOSURE

A minimum of a 15 gallon tank is suitable for a Pixie Frog.

SUBSTRATE

We recommend a loose coconut fiber substrate and sphagnum moss. These substrates will help hold humidity and allow your Pixie Frog to burrow.

BRANCHES & PLANTS

Branches or cork pieces are ideal for creating shelters for your Pixie frogs. Plants are not recommended as they will get uprooted and crushed by your frog.

DAY/NIGHT CYCLES & HEATING

All amphibians must have distinct day and night periods in their enclosures. Pixie Frogs need 8-12 hours of daytime and 8-12 hours of nighttime.

HABITAT MAINTENANCE

Daily maintenance should consist of spot cleaning by removing soiled substrate, cleaning water bowl thoroughly and wiping glass clean. The entire tank should be cleaned thoroughly at least once every month.
