88 - Introduce carrying an article

88 - Introduce carrying an article

Some dogs are naturally motivated to carry things in their mouth. This exercise gives them an outlet for this desire and can also be of benefit to you!

    1. Place a small milk crate with empty plastic bottles on the loor and encourage your dog to target the handle as described in ways 72 and 85.

    2. When he is conidently targeting the handle, withhold the click until he puts his mouth on the handle. Click and treat. Repeat a few times.

    3. Wait until he picks up the crate by the handle, then click and treat. Repeat a few times.

     Excellent!

    4. When he picks it up again, encourage him to move towards you. Don't panic if he drops the crate at any point or tries to grab the milk bottles. Stay neutral but click as soon as he picks up the crate again, to reinforce he is doing the right thing.

    5. Continue to shape the behavior until your dog can pick up the crate and bring it to you before you click. When he is conident with the whole skill, begin to add the cues you used for retrieve (way 69) and release (way 14). If you want to increase the weight of the crate begin to put water into the bottles but make sure that the crate is balanced and not made lop-sided by the water.
