80 - Go hunting for treats

80 - Go hunting for treats

Games that use your dog’s scenting ability are not only rewarding for him, but mentally tiring, which is rewarding for you too. This is a step up from the simple food scattering exercise (way 31).

1. Tether your dog (way 71) or have a helper hold on to him. Show your dog his favourite treats and let him see you move a short distance away. As you move away, keep bending down and touching the ground, sometimes leaving a treat and sometimes not so that he gets the idea of putting his nose down and checking the whole area.

2. Release him to go and search for his treats. Repeat a couple of times.

3. Now start hiding the treats in less obvious places. Let him see you disappear with the treats and then return to release him to ind them. Now that he has to work harder, leave a random jackpot to really keep him keen - several yummy treats in a pile.
