    79 - Try 'down stay out-of-sight'

    The steps to this exercise are the same as the sit stay out-of-sight' (way 78). If your dog is nervous but is the type of dog to internalize his concerns, he may stay as asked but prefer to stand or sit. If he does, go back to the easier down exercise (way 17) and use a bodywrap or T-shirt to help him feel more secure.

    1. Set up your dog up to do a down stay 8-10 paces from a place where you can hide.

    2. Disappear from your dog's view for a few seconds then walk back and reward him, then walk away again.

    3. If your dog is settled, repeat this step.

    Gradually extend the time that you are out of sight so that he is eventually able to cope with you being away for at least two minutes of a three-minute down stay.

    Hide so that you are out of your dog's view.
