78 - Begin working on 'sit stay out-of-sight'

Once your dog can maintain a two-minute sit in sight (way 63), it is time to progress this exercise. Here you are going to teach him to sit and stay while you are out of sight.

1. Set up your dog to do a sit stay 8-10 paces away from something that you can duck behind or somewhere you can easily move out of sight. Remember to give him the sit stay cue.

2. Disappear from your dog's view for a few seconds then walk back and reward him.

3. If your dog is settled repeat this step.

Build up gradually so that he is able to cope with you being out of sight for at least one minute of the two-minute sit stay.

Move behind a tree or wall so that you are out of sight.
