    72 - Use a target stick

Teaching your dog to follow a target stick is an extension of the hand target (way 24) and enables you to begin to work him at more of a distance. It is particularly useful for practising following and loose leash walking when you have a small dog, as it removes the need to bend over the dog, making the exercise less intimidating for the dog and much easier on your back. You can buy ready made target sticks from various sources, or make your own. The one we are using is a telescopic magnet, which can be purchased very cheaply from a hardware store. It has a brightly coloured cat toy fitted neatly over the magnet at the end. This target stick can be used at varying lengths so is both versatile to handle and attractive for the dog to follow.

    1. Hold the target stick vertically so that the ball is at eye level to your dog; as he looks at the ball, click and treat.

    2. When your dog moves towards the target, click and treat. Make sure that you click before he opens his mouth and attempts to grab it.

    3. Begin to move the target around slowly; click and treat as your dog follows it.

Progress at a rate that will maintain your dog's interest. Be creative and think of uses for the target stick, including tricks you might be able to teach, such as circling left or right perhaps.
