70 - Move on to multiple retrieves

70 - Move on to multiple retrieves

Now your dog is having fun returning to you with one article it is time to 'up the ante' and teach him how to retrieve multiple toys that are thrown at the same time. Try to play with toys of different textures and materials so that he learns to carry a variety of different articles.

Give him a verbal cue, such as 'dead', to let him know that the article is now out of play and encourage him to retrieve another article

The idea of retrieving several articles can be confusing for some dogs, so start with just two thrown a short distance away and gradually build up his conidence until he can retrieve up to half a dozen articles one after the other. If he is reluctant to pick up any particular texture go back to way 18 - playing the shared game to encourage your dog to enjoy retrieving anything he is asked to bring back.

Multiple retrieves are more of a challenge

ENSURE YOU GET ALL THE TOYS BACK

Make every single article your dog brings back exciting and rewarding. Stop and play briefly with each one he returns, or at the very least tell him how wonderful he is before asking him to go back for another. If most retrieves are taken for granted by you and are not fun or rewarding to him, the game will become boring for most dogs.
