5 - Teach food bowl confidence

It is very sad that new owners are still frequently advised to take the dog’s food bowl away while he is eating ‘to prove who is the boss’. In reality this is more likely to stress a dog and cause him to develop a condition called IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome). The dog is actually inadvertently trained to growl and guard both the food and the bowl because a human near the food bowl means a potential threat to his meal.

    Be fair to your dog

Let’s face it, many humans would swiftly develop FFJS (Fast Fork Jab Syndrome) if some clown kept attempting to snatch their plate away just as they were tucking into a tasty meal, so it is important to encourage your dog to feel con dent about humans being near his food bowl while he is eating. A simple and effective way to do this is to add tasty tidbits to the bowl while your dog is eating. It is then potentially rewarding for people to be near the food bowl. On the very rare occasion that you may need to remove the bowl when your dog is eating, you will not have a problem.

This exercise will have the added benefit of teaching your dog to behave appropriately with food around other dogs
