40 - Take a hike in the country

40 - Take a hike in the country

There can be few better things in life than a country walk in the company of a faithful hound. Not only are you both enjoying the freedom of a lovely stroll but you have an opportunity to practice your training skills in a new environment.

You can incorporate some groundwork into your walk and take advantage of the varied terrain, gates, bridges and stiles to teach your dog how to negotiate his way through, around, under and over obstacles. Dogs that are not very body aware or are nervous may be unsure about uneven ground or clambering through wooden fencing, for example, but you can help them to improve their co-ordination and confidence by setting up some simple obstacles at home.
