4 - Cultivate good food bowl manners

4 - Cultivate good food bowl manners

Dogs need to learn how to be polite and confident around both food and the food bowl and this can be done in a kind and motivational way using clicker training

  1. Put a little food into the bowl and hold it at chest height. Your dog may rush forward to look up at the bowl: say nothing and when he steps back click and treat. Be patient and repeat until he learns to step back a few paces.
  2. The next stage is to start lowering the bowl towards the floor. If he dashes forward, say nothing, raise the bowl again, wait for him to back off then click and treat. Repeat until your dog learns to step back and you can get the bowl nearer and nearer the ground. If you have already taught the ‘off’ cue (see way 14) it can be used at this stage. Stay patient and repeat the process until your dog learns to keep back while the bowl is placed on the floor.

Cookie gets a high-value reward from Marie for politely backing away from the bowl and sitting

Naomi helps to extend food bowl training. Cookie has learned ‘off ’ so here Naomi gives the cue and pauses to help Cookie build self-control before she releases her to the food bowl
