36 - Introduce negotiating slippery surfaces safely

Teaching a dog to walk over a variety of surfaces improves his confidence and co-ordination and encourages him to think about where he is placing his paws through the different textures he will feel on his pads. Many dogs are challenged if they are faced with a slippery floor, particularly if they are old or stiff through the hindquarters.

    1. Lay a line of plastic mats or add a combination of different textures such as car mats, blankets and wood in a straight line in your home or in your garden.
    2. Put a harness on your dog and attach one end of a double-clipped leash to the at collar. Attach the second clip to the harness. If your dog is calm when walking on a leash you will not need a harness.
    3. Walk your dog over the different surfaces and watch his responses.

    WORK WITH TTOUCHES

If your dog is hesitant use the Clouded Leopard TTouch and bodywrap (way 10) to give him better mind–body awareness.

Inka demonstrates perfect walking on shiny surfaces. Different textures help to improve focus and co-ordination
