3 - Follow a sensible feeding regime

3 - Follow a sensible feeding regime

It is up to you to decide when, where and what your dog is going to be fed. Remember dogs do what is rewarding for them. They can be really appealing and cute when they are trying to obtain an early dinner but if you inadvertently reward your boy for being pushy, and feed him when he asks, you can hardly blame him for leaping about and squeaking because he thinks that his dinner is far more important than that long distance call from a much-loved relative.

Choose when and what to feed your dog but be aware that certain foods can trigger unwanted behaviors in some dogs

Setting standards

Decide on a good diet, put the food down and leave it for 10 minutes. If there is anything left in the bowl, clear it away and do not offer anything else until the next mealtime. Fussy eating habits tend to develop very quickly if you constantly offer alternatives. Don’t feed your dog from your own plate while you are still eating. If you do, do not be surprised when you feel a cascade of drool down your legs when eating, or worse still, catch sight of a lovely trail of saliva on your visitors during a barbeque or dinner party.

OFF HIS FOOD?

If your dog is in the habit of eating his food when it is presented, you are more likely to be alerted to any signs of illness and can seek early veterinary advice if necessary
