    Tosa |Japan|

Also known as the Tosa Inu or Tosa Token, this breed originated on Shikoku, the smallest of the four Japanese islands, in the old Tosa (now Kochi) Prefecture. These dogs were bred for dog fighting, and with their power, strength, and agility, they excelled in that capacity. European mastiff-type breeds were introduced, increasing the size and bulk of the Tosa, and the breed gained great notoriety across Japan. The Tosa nearly disappeared during World War II, but has since been re-established and is source of pride for Japan. Tosas are calm, dignified dogs that will react aggressively when provoked, and the breed has been banned in a number of countries. Although Tosas can make companion dogs with consistent socialization and training, they are only suitable for very experienced homes.
