    Teddy Roosevelt Terrier |United States|

    Teddy Roosevelt Terrier |United States|

This American breed developed from a variety of small terrier-types and other breeds brought to the United States mostly by working class English immigrants. Their dogs—which included Manchester Terriers, Smooth Fox Terriers, Bull Terriers, Whippets, and Beagles— were widely used for ratting on farms, in factories, in harbor areas, and at industrial sites. Eventually a terrier of uniform characteristics began to emerge and became known as the Rat Terrier based on its hunting propensities. There were two clear types of Rat Terrier, one with long legs and one with shorter legs. The shorter-legged variety became known as the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier based on the president’s affection for the breed.
