    Spanish Mastiff |Spain|

    Spanish Mastiff |Spain|

This breed is generally considered to be ancient, its ancestors being taken to the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians before the Roman invasions of the first century. Mastiffs are mentioned a number of times by Roman historians who remarked on their size, their ability to tend herds, and their skill at fighting predators such as wolves. Over time, these giant dogs were used as war dogs and were taken to the Americas by the conquistadors for use against the native people. More often, however, they were used for herding, primarily guarding huge herds of cattle and sheep. The Spanish Mastiff is brave, protective, independent, calm, kind, and dignified. However, these dogs are suitable companions only for an experienced, rural home.
