Schipperke |Belgium|

These small, black dogs probably developed from the now-extinct Leauvenaar that was related to the Belgian Shepherd. Schipperkes were widely used for guarding and ratting by farmers, and were popular with boatman on the waterways of Belgium and the Netherlands. They remained a working-man’s dog until 1885 when Queen Marie-Henriette bought one and instantly elevated the breed to high society. Given their compact size and protective tendencies, Schipperke’s are lively, bold, and adventurous dogs that are reserved with strangers.
