The Schapendoes, or Dutch Sheepdog, developed in the Drenthe province of the Netherlands where it has been a working livestock breed for many centuries. The dogs were used for a variety of roles on farms, but excelled at herding, and are still used for this today. Although they were once widespread in the Netherlands, the breed was close to extinction by the end of World War II. It was re-established by enthusiasts, notably the Dutch author and martial-arts pioneer Pieter Toepoel. They are related to the Bearded Collie, Puli, Briard, and Owczarek Nizinny. Schapendoes are engaging, intelligent dogs that make wonderful family companions for an active home, and excel at events such as agility.
