Rat Terrier |United States|

This American breed developed from the various small terrier-types brought to the United States by English immigrants at the end of the nineteenth century. These dogs are believed to trace primarily to Manchester Terrier and Smooth Fox Terrier crosses and were highly rated for their rat-killing abilities. The Rat Terrier was used for vermin control, but also for the sport of rat catching and was deemed the most successful breed in this endeavor. At some point, Whippet or Italian Greyhound was added to the mix to increase the Rat Terrier’s speed and raciness, and Beagle to improve its hunting skills. President Theodore Roosevelt kept a number of Rat Terriers and did much to popularize the breed. These dogs are said to have two personalities: their dedicated and relentless hunting character, and their soft, affectionate, playful nature in the home. They make wonderful companion animals and generally get along with other dogs.
