Pharaoh Hound |Malta|

Pharaoh Hound |Malta|

The elegant and powerful Pharaoh Hound has a noble bearing and is one of the oldest domesticated breeds. It takes its name from its resemblance to images from Ancient Egypt painted as many as 5,000 years ago. Pharaoh Hounds are versatile, intelligent, sensitive, and rewarding dogs that make excellent companion animals for the right home environment. A unique and endearing breed characteristic is their “blush”—when they are excited, their noses and ears turn a deep rose.

History

The Pharaoh Hound has changed little in appearance from its depiction on Ancient Egyptian tombs and is a breed with a long history. Although its origins trace to the Middle East, it was in Malta that the breed was preserved, taken there by the Phoenicians who settled the region in the seventh century BCE. The Maltese treasured their dogs, which they used for hunting, for guarding, and as companions. Today, the Pharaoh Hound is recognized as the national dog of Malta.

Pharaoh Hounds are extremely active, and their lively, inquisitive nature becomes evident at an early age.
