The beautiful Phalène is the drop-ear variety of the Papillon, and is not recognized as a separate breed by some kennel clubs. These lovely little dogs trace back to at least the sixteenth century, when they began to appear in paintings. The Phalène is believed to be the older of the two types of Papillon and was once more popular than its prick-eared relative. Their fortunes reversed at the end of the nineteenth century when the Phalène started to disappear. It is only within the last fifty years or so that there has been a concerted effort to reestablish the Phalène, and numbers are now on the rise. The Phalène is a delightful, charming companion, a friend to everyone, playful, sweet, calm, and gorgeous.
