McNab |United States|

McNab |United States|

The McNab is a herding breed that traces back to about 1885 to Alexander McNab, a Scottish farmer who emigrated to Mendocino County, California. Dissatisfied with the working ability of local dogs, he returned to Scotland and brought two Scotch Collies, Peter and Fred, back to the United States. Those were bred to Spanish dogs belonging to local Basque sheep-herders as well as to other imported Scotch Collies. The McNab is a versatile livestock dog that will “head” and “heel” and is also used for hunting. They are obedient, intelligent, enduring, and friendly and, as such, are popular with ranchers and farmers. They have no formal breed standard.
