Leonberger |Germany|

Leonberger |Germany|

The Leonberger traces to the nineteenth century and the efforts of Heinrich Essig, from Leonberg, in Germany. He is said to have used Newfoundlands, St. Bernards, and Great Pyrenees to establish the breed, and he exported them in large numbers. The first breed standard was written in 1895. Imposing, powerful dogs, they were used as farm dogs and for light draft. They also make wonderful family companions provided they are obedience trained and socialized. They have a naturally gentle and sweet temperament and are generally good with children and other dogs. Leonbergers have also been widely used as therapy dogs.
