    Karst Shepherd |Slovenia|

The Karst Shepherd developed from ancient Molossian types and has been used for guarding and herding livestock for centuries. Dogs of a similar type are mentioned in Baron Vajkart Valvasor’s 1689 book, The Glory of the Duchy of Carniole. The breed was originally known as the Illyrian Shepherd and was grouped with other shepherd dogs from former Yugoslavia, but in 1968, the Karst Shepherd was recognized as a separate breed. The dogs are still used to guard people and livestock or as companions.
