    Japanese Terrier |Japan|

Japanese Terriers are rare in Japan and seldom heard of beyond their homeland. They developed during the seventeenth century when Smooth Fox Terriers were exported to Nagasaki from the Netherlands and bred to other small dogs. Selective breeding did not start in earnest until the 1920s, however, with a clear type emerging by the 1930s. Unusually for a Terrier breed, the Japanese Terrier was bred primarily to be a lap dog, and not with a working purpose, although they will hunt small vermin. They have lively, cheerful natures, and are intelligent, friendly. and relatively easy to train for a terrier breed.
