    Hovawart |Germany|

The Hovawart is an ancient working breed that takes its name from the old German words: Hova (hof ), meaning “farm,” and wart (wächter), meaning “watchman,” which describes the breed’s chief role. They are thought to have originated in the Harz and Black Forest regions of Germany and were bred by the German aristocracy to guard their estates. The breed was not organized until after World War I when zoologist Dr. Konig began a program to cement their characteristics, introducing German Shepherd, Newfoundland, and Leonberger stock, with the first litter registered in Germany in 1922.
