    Great Dane |Germany|

This majestic breed is one of the largest in the world and yet also one of the most elegant, lacking the bulky frame typical of most mastifftypes. Instead, the lovely Great Dane combines all the best parts of the mastiff with those of the hound. Historically the breed was renowned for its ferocity and used for hunting large game and for guarding the aristocracies’ castles and estates. Today the breed is noted as a true gentle giant, loyal to its family, good with children, generally good with other animals, and protective of its home.

    History

Great Danes got their misleading name (they are not Danish) in the 1700s when French naturalist Comte de Buffon saw them in Denmark and assumed they originated there. It is something of a mystery why the name stuck! The breed probably descended from the original mastiff-types of prehistory that migrated from Central Asia westward into Europe, developing different characteristics over time. Greyhounds, Irish Wolfhounds, and Scottish Deerhounds are thought to have contributed to this giant breed. Historically, Great Danes were the preserve of the aristocracy and were greatly valued for their bravery when hunting. Although they often have their ears cropped in the United States, this practice was banned in England in 1894 by Edward, Prince of Wales. The breed became very popular in England, and two important kennels—the Send and Ouborough—were established in the 1920s and 1930s. Great Danes were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887, and since that time, the breed has consistently risen in popularity.

Great Dane puppies go through rapid growth spurts and should not be overexercised.
