    Dutch Smoushond |Netherlands|

    Dutch Smoushond |Netherlands|

This rare breed of Dutch Terrier almost completely disappeared after World War II and was re-established only through the efforts of a handful of breeders. Historians believe that the Smoushond had its foundation with the Schnauzer, possibly as a color variant (which has always been unaccepted by Schnauzer breeders). In the 1800s, the Smoushond was popular as a gentleman’s stable dog or coach dog, and was noted for its ratting skills. When the breed was reconstructed in the 1970s, a mix of terrier breeds was used, including Border Terriers crossed with the few remaining examples of the original breed. The Smoushond is devoted, affectionate, and lively in nature.
