Chow Chow |China|

Recent DNA testing has revealed that the Chow Chow is directly descended from the earliest domesticated dogs and is one of the ancestors of the modern Spitz-type breeds. Chow Chows are believed to have developed in the Arctic Circle before moving south into Mongolia, Siberia, and China. The Chow Chow is a quiet, reserved, and dignified breed. These dogs are loyal to their families, but not overly demonstrative. Although they are mostly companions now, historically they were used as versatile farm dogs for draft work, guarding, herding livestock, and hunting; they were even kept for their meat.
