    Cavalier King Charles Spaniel |England|

    Cavalier King Charles Spaniel |England|

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is renowned for its gentle disposition and sweet nature. These dogs have a lovely temperament, being affectionate, calm, quiet, easy to train, and playful. They are generally good with other dogs and pets, and are friendly to all, which makes them unhelpful watchdogs! They are excellent lap dogs, but also love a run in the countryside and enjoy most activities. They still retain their spaniel instincts and will often flush small game from undergrowth.

These dogs trace their roots back many centuries and share the same early history as their smaller relative the King Charles Spaniel or English Toy Spaniel, as they are known in the United States. Small spaniel-types appeared in European paintings from the sixteenth century onward, when they were known as “comforters” and were the preserve of the aristocracy. They are particularly associated with King Charles I of England whose little spaniel, Rogue, is said to have accompanied him to his execution. It is from Charles II, the Cavalier King, that the breed takes its name though. He was besotted with the little dogs who always accompanied him, and decreed they be allowed entrance into any public building, including public houses and parliament. The breed did not get its name until 1928, when their standard was drawn up. This differed considerably from that of the King Charles Spaniel, particularly in the shape of their heads.

Only buy puppies from recommended breeders, and always make sure you visit the puppy in its home with its mother.
