    Cao De Castro Laboreiro |Portugal|

This rare breed, also known as the Portuguese Cattle Dog, takes its name from the town of Castro Laboreiro in northern Portugal. Although no early records exist, the breed is believed to be ancient. These dogs were typically used by shepherds in remote mountainous regions for herding and guarding livestock, and for guarding homes. The dogs had to be brave enough to tackle predators such as wolves, and needed tremendous stamina and endurance. As farming methods changed, this breed’s working role began to disappear. They are now more commonly used as guard dogs and companions.
