    Briard |France|

The Briard is an ancient working breed that is said to have been favored by the Frankish King Charlemagne in the eighth century, appearing alongside him in tapestries. Many centuries later Napoléon Bonaparte kept two Briards, possibly as guard dogs. Their original use was for guarding livestock herds and property, and they were valued for their fearlessness. The Briard is loyal and protective with its family, but is an independent thinker and wary of strangers. A good companion for an active and experienced home.
