    Boxer |Germany|

The exuberant and multitalented Boxer is renowned for its playful and enthusiastic outlook on life. These dogs have been used for many purposes over the years and were one of the first breeds to be employed by the German police and military, being used as couriers among other things. They are highly intelligent as a breed and have been successfully trained as service dogs and assistance dogs; they are also very athletic and can excel at agility. Boxers are very people oriented and love to be the center of attention. Although originally bred as working dogs, they are now very popular as companion animals.

    History

Boxers were originally bred from bullbaiting dogs for dog-fighting contests, but in the nineteenth century, they were used by butchers in slaughterhouses to move livestock through the yards, and by cattlemen for driving herds. A Boxer club had formed in Germany by 1895, and the first breed standard was drawn up. Boxers arrived in the United States at the start of the twentieth century, and the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904.

Some Boxer puppies are born white, although this color is not accepted by some of the breed registrations. White in Boxers is not a genetic defect or albino, but simply a color. Some white dogs will be prone to deafness and risk of sunburn.
