Border Collie |England, Scotland and Wales|

The Border Collie is widely considered the leading sheep-herding breed in the world, with few other breeds matching it for speed, agility, working ability, and drive. In addition, they are regularly ranked within the top ten most intelligent dog breeds and are particularly receptive to training. They are sensitive, highly energetic dogs with excellent problem-solving skills. This breed is happiest when working or involved in high-octane activities and requires plenty of exercise. As long as their mental and physical needs are met, Border Collies can be engaging, lively, and rewarding members of the family.

    History

Originally known as the Working Collie, the Border Collie emerged from ancient native British working dogs, developed along the borders of Scotland and England, and was named the Border Collie in 1915. In England, Queen Victoria promoted the breed by owning several, including Sharp, who was frequently photographed with her. Old Hemp, born in 1893; Wilson Cap, born in 1937; and Wiston Cap, born in 1963, were all extremely influential in the breeding of the modern Border Collie, with Wiston Cap’s image depicted on the International Sheep Dog Society badge.

Border Collies are still the first choice as sheepdogs across the world and are frequent winners in sheepdog trials; they also excel at agility, fly ball, and most energetic activities.

Border Collie puppies develop the characteristic “eye” behavior at an early age. This is when the dog fixes something (like sheep) with a steady, hypnotic stare, often adopting a distinctive crouching stance.
