Boerboel |South Africa|

Boerboel |South Africa|

This large, powerful breed traces to 1652 when Dutch colonist Jan van Riebeeck arrived at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, with three ships and his own dog, a bullenbijter. This was a large, heavy mastiff type, which bred with native South African stock. Many other European breeds were introduced to the area as trading grew, and some of these contributed toward the developing South African breed—one of mastiff appearance with great endurance and hardiness. Boerboels were required to be fearless guard dogs in addition to utilitarian, general farm workers. They are not suitable for first-time dog owners.
