    Beauceron |France|

    Beauceron |France|

The intelligent and brave Beauceron is the largest of the French sheepdog breeds and dates back to at least 1578, when it was first mentioned in a French manuscript. The breed has developed with no influence from other foreign breeds and is thought to have originated in La Beauce, the plains region surrounding Paris. By the nineteenth century there were two types of French working breeds, the short-coated Beauceron and the long-coated Briard, each sharing similar histories. The Beauceron was an all-purpose farm dog used for herding, for guarding livestock and property, and as a companion. They are obedient dogs and have been used by the French military in the past. They can make good companions but must be properly socialized and require a lot of exercise.
