    Australian Terrier |Australia|

The rugged Australian Terrier traces to Tasmania where breeders wanted to develop a small, tough terrier that was suited to the climate, was able to control rodent populations, and could serve as a watchdog. Some Australian Terriers were also used for herding sheep. The breed was founded on a mix of mostly British terrier breeds, including the Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Manchester, and Yorkshire Terriers. The Australian Terrier was the first Australian breed be recognized and shown in its home country. These dogs are dedicated ratters and worked in gold mines, around harbor areas, and on farms to control rat populations. They make good watchdogs and are excellent family companions, but can be reserved with other people and dogs.
