    American Staffordshire Terrier |United States|

Like the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier also developed from English Bulldog and terrier crosses. When immigrants arrived in the United States, they brought their bull and terrier crosses, later known as American Bull Terriers (the name was revised in 1969to American Staffordshire Terrier). Those animals developed into larger more powerful dogs than their relatives in England. Although originally bred for fighting, these dogs also had to be easy to handle and gentle with people, which is characteristic of the breed. Despite their bad press, they are often affectionate, playful, and loyal. They can be aggressive to other dogs, but this can be overcome with proper socialization and training. They are not suitable for first-time dog owners.
