    Airedale Terrier |United Kingdom|

The Airedale is the tallest of the terrier breeds and is often referred to as the “King of Terriers.” These are extremely versatile dogs that have been used to perform a variety of functions since their development during the nineteenth century. The Airedale is an intelligent and trainable breed, which has led to its use in the police force and military. In addition, they have superb hunting, tracking, and retrieving skills, and were widely used on farms for vermin control. They also make useful watchdogs and devoted companions. Their heritage is largely unknown, but they are believed to have developed through nowextinct Black and Tan Rough Terrier from the South Yorkshire area, crossed with Bull Terriers and Irish Terriers. They were referred to as Working, Bingley, or Waterside Terriers for some years before being named Airedale Terriers in 1879.
