When a dog smells urine,
it triggers a natural urge to mark that spot again as a
way of establishing natural boundaries and leaving a
“calling card” for potential mates or would-be rivals.
The key to breaking this chain is to get rid of this
scent by using a stain and odor remover formulated just
for dog urine. Regular household cleaners aren’t
suitable, because even though they remove the stain they
still leave trace odors that act as blaring “urinate
here” signs for dogs. (A dog’s sense of smell is about
100 times more sensitive than ours.)
Always have a stain and odor remover product at home,
since these products are most effective when applied
quickly after a dog marks. In the case of older dogs
that suddenly forget their housebreaking lessons, plan a
visit to the veterinarian to rule out medical causes for
the soiling.
