Although being "skunked"
is stinky and scary, it is rarely harmful to dogs. Quick
action after a dog is sprayed will make it much easier
to remove the skunk odor faster. The first thing you
should do after a pet is skunked is rinse out the dog’s
eyes to reduce the risk of irritation. After doing this,
give the dog a thorough shampooing, followed by the
application of a skunk odor remover.
Since skunks can carry
rabies and other diseases, inspect the dog carefully to
make sure he hasn't been bitten. In very few cases, a
dog can have a negative reaction to skunk spray. So if
your pet vomits repeatedly, or if his eyes, nose or gums
become irritated, he should be taken to the vet at once.
