STEP CLIMBING

My dog is having trouble climbing up the stairs in our house. What can I do?

The aging process and all of the ailments that come with it, including hip dysplasia and arthritis, will reduce a dog’s mobility. You should not be alarmed if a pet has trouble making it up a flight of stairs that once presented no problem. Larger breeds especially are prone to conditions that can make climbing difficult. Take your pet to a veterinarian to see if there are any medical options that can make his life easier.

Try a harness that fits comfortably around the chest to provide added support for the dog, and guide him as he climbs steps. This should help reduce the stress on the pet’s limbs and joints, without requiring that you actually lift him.

Another positive step is to give the pet a glucosamine and chondroitin based dietary supplement for arthritis.

According to one study, more than half (55%) of the pet dogs in the US that suffer from arthritis go untreated. Be proactive and seek veterinary care for an arthritic dog.
