Housebreaking can start
with a puppy that’s only 7-8 weeks old, which is younger
than the age most puppies are when they’re purchased or
adopted. The earliest phases of housebreaking the very
young puppy are very simple: as soon as he indicates
he’s about to relieve himself, pick him up and take him
outside. If this isn’t practical, pick up the puppy and
place him on an absorbent pad. (Preferably, this pad
will be located in the garage or on the back porch or
deck.) Then praise him lavishly for not “making” in the
house.
In no time, the puppy
will catch on and try to go outside whenever the urge to
urinate or defecate strikes. There are also a variety of
sprays that will attract a puppy to a spot and stimulate
the urge to urinate. Applying these sprays to an area
every time a dog is taken out will facilitate the
housebreaking process.
