Inspecting and cleaning
ears should be part of their early puppy care routine. A
puppy's ears should be checked weekly for signs of waxy
buildup and dark specks. As part of this inspection, the
ears should be sniffed. If there's an unpleasant odor,
or the ears seem unusually dirty in any way, a
veterinarian should be consulted.
Depending on the dog,
you should clean the puppy's ears 2-4 times a month.
Cleaning is best done using a puppy-safe ear cleaner and
cotton balls. Be sure not to go too far inside the ear
with the cotton ball. As a general rule, you should
never push the cotton further into the ear than you can
see with your eyes. Change cotton balls as needed, and
avoid using the same cotton ball on both ears.
Chances are your puppy
will not enjoy getting his ears cleaned, but the time to
get him used to this important grooming procedure is
when he is young.
