A puppy is old enough to
be given a bath--provided it’s with a mild puppy shampoo
and lukewarm water (and he's dried thoroughly
afterward)--soon after you take him home. Cotton should
be placed in the puppy's ears -- but not forced in
deeply -- to keep water from entering the ear canal.
(This is true of adult dogs as well.) Brush the puppy
before bathing to remove mats and tangles.
Giving a puppy an
occasional bath not only helps remove bacteria, debris
and possible parasites from his skin and coat, it will
also make him more ready to accept the idea of being
groomed later in life.
Don’t worry about drying
out a puppy's skin from bathing. Regular baths, provided
they're not done excessively, actually stimulate the
production of skin oils. Plus, quality shampoos will
help restore the skin and coat, as will a premium diet.
As adults, most pet dogs can, and should, be bathed
monthly with a quality shampoo, followed by a
conditioner.
