Obsessive paw licking is
not uncommon, and it can have many different causes. You
should take your dog to a veterinarian to eliminate
underlying medical conditions, such as allergies,
infections or arthritic pain, that are compelling the
dog to lick.
Dogs will also engage in
excessive paw licking and other obsessive grooming
behavior out of boredom. In these cases, you can address
the issue by spending more time playing with the dog, or
by giving him interactive, mentally stimulating toys.
Excessive paw licking
will often perpetuate an irritation on the paws after
the original cause has passed. Address this issue by
using an animal safe taste deterrent or an Elizabethan
collar to break the licking cycle.
