Some dogs like the
Newfoundland, Chesapeake Bay Retriever and other water
dogs naturally have oily skin, which helps to protect
them from the cold when swimming in northern climates.
However all dogs, including these breeds, can produce
excess oil, which accumulates on the skin, leading to
odors and dandruff. It isVrecommended that you brush an
oily dog regularly, since this will remove dirt and
excess oil.
Body wipes and dry
shampoos can also help reduce oil. Washing with a
medicated “oily coat” shampoo (typically a tar-based
product) is also a good idea. Care should be taken,
though, not to bathe the pet too often, since frequent
bathing stimulates glands and actually makes the skin
and coat more oily. Remember that oil is essential to
the well-being of Newfoundland and similar dogs so the
goal should be to keep it from becoming excessive, not
eliminating it.
Medicated shampoo should never be used on a puppy under
6-8 weeks of age.
