NOT LISTENING WHEN OFF LEASH

At home our dog is obedient, so why does he become a different animal when he’s off leash in the park, ignoring us and not coming when he’s called?

This situation is not uncommon. Some dogs that are well behaved at home or when walking on a leash, seem to forget their training lessons when they’re allowed to run free in the park or at the beach. Other dogs, squirrels, children playing, people at a picnic, and a host of other distractions can all take a dog’s mind off listening to his owners.

You can address this issue simply by keeping the dog on a leash whenever you leave the house. Understandably, though, many dog owners are reluctant to take this step, since it deprives the pet of the opportunity to romp and enjoy outdoor activities with the family. Aside from robbing the dog of a good bonding experience, eliminating off leash outings deprives him of the chance to exercise and burn up calories outdoors.

In most cases, it will be much better and healthier for the dog if you invest in a remote training system. This will allow the dog to be trained to follow commands from a distance, even when off leash. Remote training systems work by applying a mild electric pulse to the dog’s neck through a special collar. The collar is activated via radio waves when the dog’s owner pushes the button on a transmitter.

It is critically important that you know that Remote Training Systems are designed only to reinforce behaviors that the dog already knows. They should never be used to teach a dog new training lessons.

The purpose of a Remote Training System is to get the dog to tune out distractions, so he can focus on behaviors and commands that he already knows. It is not fair for a dog owner to expect a pet to “guess” at the right behavior simply because he has tuned out distractions. The correct behavior must already be ingrained in the animal through previous training. For example, you would use this system to teach your dog to stop and sit outside, only if the pet already knew the basic “sit” command. If the dog did not know the sit command, you would have to teach it to the pet first using conventional training methods.

Remote Training Systems are an advanced tool that is best used by experienced dog owners or with the help of a professional trainer. When you purchase these tools, you should also get a training book or magazine that offers advice on using Remote Training Systems.

There are two basic functions that a Remote Training System will perform when used properly:

  1. It will reinforce positive behavior, such as “coming” and “sitting”

  2. It will get the dog to stop engaging in destructive behavior such as digging flowers.
