Always consult a
veterinarian for persistent dry itchy skin, since it may
well be the result of an allergy or a potentially
serious medical condition. For immediate, short term relief,
bathe your pet in a soothing anti-itch shampoo. These
products typically contain ingredients like
hydrocortisone, which will relieve itching.
Also try a topical
anti-itch spray or cream to relieve itching. Sprays are
best used on the belly, around the anus and other areas
with thinner hair, while creams and salves should be
used on the paw pads. Since pets have a tendency to lick
at creams, keep your pet busy and under close watch for
20-30 minutes after the medication has been applied so
it has a chance to work. A dog with dry, itchy skin can
also be given Biotin vitamin B supplement, or Brewer’s
Yeast.
