Technically this is
called acute moist dermatitis, which is more
commonly known as a hot spot. Dogs typically get hot
spots from repeatedly licking an insect bite or other
skin irritation. The constant licking transforms this
relatively minor problem into a significant medical
issue. This all happens very quickly, often in a matter
of hours. It is recommended that the dog be bathed with
a gentle itch-soothing shampoo formula for quick relief.
An Elizabethan collar should also be put on the dog to
prevent her from licking at the hot spot and worsening
it. Since hot spots can spiral out of control in no
time, take the dog to a veterinarian for treatment if
the problem doesn’t show signs of improvement quickly.
