DIGGING IN THE GARDEN

Is there a way to stop my dog from digging in the garden?

Dogs dig for a variety of reasons. Regardless of the cause, digging is a natural instinct that is hardwired into the dog’s makeup. However, dog owners can stop their pets from churning up their flowerbeds by spraying outdoor repellent on areas that are off limits for digging. These products work by giving off a scent that disrupts the dog’s sense of smell. While marking some spots in the yard as no dig zones, the dog owner should also designate a place where it’s ok for a pet to dig. The goal of training is not to stop digging, but to redirect it to appropriate areas.

If the outdoor repellent does not work, try a remote training system. This consists of a collar and hand held radio transmitter. By pushing a button on the transmitter, the collar administrates a mild electric shock to the dog when he digs in the flowerbed.
